FOR SALE NEW HOMES ON THE SITE OF THE OLD HISTORIC COACHING INN

At Whites Estate Agents in Salisbury, we are excited to market a variety of attractively styled new homes designed by London-based architects, Michael Trentham Architects. These new homes are situated on the site of the historic Winterslow Hut or more latterly known as The Pheasant Hotel in 2011.  The dwellings are now aptly named "The Pheasantry".

The Winterslow Hut is fondly remembered in history as a late 17th-century coaching inn well positioned on London Road between Salisbury to Andover, close to the popular village of Winterslow on which the London to Exeter stagecoach route would have traveled.  The inn made the perfect place to stop and rest for drovers, then, later on, stage and mail coaches.

The Hut was in the media in October 1816 when an escaped lioness attacked the horses of the London-bound Quicksilver mail coach as it drew up outside the inn during the night. Also, of note, during World War II, the inn was used as off-site accommodation for Royal Air Force night fighter crews stationed at nearby RAF Middle Wallop.

It boasts beautiful local walks great for those who enjoy walking, cycling and riding.

Interesting places nearby:

  • The beautiful Cathedral city of Salisbury offers a wide selection of shops, restaurants, arts, and recreational facilities.  There are good train links from Salisbury to London Waterloo.
  • Stockbridge lies 9 miles east and has a large range of independent shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants, butchers, and a delicatessen.
  • Grateley train station is about nine miles north, from where trains to London Waterloo take approximately 80 minutes.
  • Salisbury has a great Racecourse, which holds regular meets.
  • There is a huge choice of both state and private schools in the area, including grammar options, as well as Farleigh Prep School, Salisbury Cathedral School, Chafyn Grove, and Godolphin and Bishop Wordsworth.
